The estimation model of tree height considering suppressed trees is developed in order to extract tree height accurately using LiDAR data. Filtered LiDAR data and Quickbird imagery are segmented using watershed segmentation method based on mathematical morphology to get the boundary of trees. And the highest point in each canopy object is used to estimate tree height. Weibull distribution is used to estimate height distribution of the suppressed trees. The experiment results indicate that the watershed segmentation method based on mathematical morphology is an effective method to extract the boundary of trees. And the R between the tree height estimated using estimation model of tree height considering suppressed trees and the tree height measured by field work is 0.93.

Estimation of stand volume by fusing low laser-sampling density LiDAR data with QuickBird panchromatic imagery in closed-canopy Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantations

This study investigated the potential of fusing low laser-sampling density LiDAR data with QuickBird panchromatic imagery for estimating stand volumes. The study area was in closed-canopy, mountainous Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantations in Japan. Stand volume in the area ranged from 250.5 to 913.1 m/ha and terrain was undulating with an elevation ranging from 135 to 391 m above se...

A GEOBIA framework to estimate forest parameters from lidar transects, Quickbird imagery and machine learning: A case study in Quebec, Canada

The GEOgraphic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) paradigm continues to prove its efficacy in remote sensing image analysis by providing tools which emulate human perception and combine analyst’s experience with meaningful image-objects. However, challenges remain in the evolution of this new paradigm as sophisticated methods attempt to deliver on the goal of automated geo-intelligence (i.e.,...

Performance of Quickbird Image and Lidar Data Fusion for 2d/3d City Mapping

In this paper we present a practical and convenient 2D city mapping and 3D digital surface model construction technique based on data merge of spatial, spectral, and textural information of QuickBird High Resolution Satellite Imagery with precise Digital Surface Model (DSM) information of LiDAR data for an urban area within the city of Cairo. Due to recent increased demand for city mapping from...

A Support Vector Regression Approach to Estimate Forest Biophysical Parameters at the Object Level Using Airborne Lidar Transects and QuickBird Data

A potential solution to reduce high acquisition costs for airborne lidar (light detection and ranging) data is to combine lidar transects and optical satellite imagery to characterize forest vertical structure. Although multiple regression is typically used for such modeling, it seldom fully captures the complex relationships between forest variables. In an effort to improve these relationships...

A Comparison of Object-based and Pixel-based Approaches to Estimate Lidar-measured Forest Canopy Height Using Quickbird Imagery

Canopy surface height (CSH) is a significant forest biophysical parameter to estimate above-ground biomass and carbon content. Highspatial resolution optical remotely sensed data have shown promising results to delineate various forest biophysical properties; though few studies have evaluated the accuracy of forest height information from such data. In this study, we compare several strategies ...
